The Variety Arts Theater opened in 1924, the 1,100-seat proscenium arch theater was considered the most beautiful and acoustically perfect theater in Los Angeles. Top stars of the legitimate theater graced its boards for many years.  J. It was 1936 and Tom Bergin, a former aviator and practicing lawyer, wanted a watering hole that reminded him of the Boston pubs of his youth. His family had left Ireland's County Kerry for Boston, where they opened the Commercial Brewery and the Old Horseshoe Tavern in Haymarket Square.  After securing what is supposedly the second oldest liquor license in L.A., Bergin opened Tom Bergin's Old Horseshoe Tavern & Thoroughbred Club.

This venerable Mid-City Irish pub has restored its original wood paneling, the horseshoe bar and the cathedral ceiling (its autographed shamrocks remain).

With the emergence of French Art Deco in the 1920s, Oviatt found the architectural style that would embody the interior design of his 1928 James Oviatt Building and its penthouse during his summer trips to Europe.  Its furnishings included a 12-ton illuminated glass cornice and glass arcade ceiling by architect Ferdinand Chanut and glassmaker Gaëtan Jeannin. René Lalique designed and created the molded glass elevator door panels, front and side doors, chandeliers, and a large panel clock.

When the building was completed, the sheltered lobby forecourt contained over thirty tons of glass by designer Rene Lalique. While most of the glass as been lost or sold over the years, a few original pieces remain in the panels at the top of the lobby columns.  The shop interior retains the elegant art deco fixtures, stair rails, and molded plaster ceiling panels.

The Oviatt Building, erected in 1927, was the first Art Deco building in Los Angeles. Designed by Albert Walker and Percy Eisen, it was lavishly embellished with French marble and more than 30 tons of Lalique's art glass — the largest shipment of its kind ever to pass through the Panama Canal.

Oviatt's ten-room penthouse was originally decorated by the Parisian design firm of Saddler et fils. The rooms featured burled mahogany furniture and cabinets, parquet wood floors in geometric patterns, carved woodwork, imported fabrics and Lalique glass throughout.
